Frequently asked Questions
- Why Cedar?
-
Northern White Cedar is one of the most decay, rot resistant and insect tolerant woods available. It has the least amount of checking/cracking and the checks will not penetrate the heartwood. A study conducted at the University of Maine found that NWC possesses a high natural durability, even when used under ground.
NWC has a significantly lower moisture content than any other wood when it is fresh cut making it easier to reach desired moisture content levels when it is air dried. This means that you virtually eliminate problems such as shrinking and settling. Air drying also allows the wood to acclimate itself to the new moisture level without harming its molecular structure.
NWC has the highest “R” factor of any of the wood species used in producing log homes. According to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, Air-conditioning Engineers) the “R” factor/Thermal Mass factor of NWC is 3.78. When a Northern White Cedar wall is constructed it is approximately 30% more energy efficient than a framed wall with R19 Fiberglass insulation installed.
